| week 21 |

| Kristin (my year of paintings partner at Wet Canvas) had asked me about using white in watercolor...while I haven’t used white watercolor...I have used opaque casein and gesso as a medium...I also have been experimenting as of late, with transparent backgrounds with opaque subjects on top...so ...week 21 is an example of this technique....The background and eggs and all the darks are regular watercolor....then I mixed some gesso in with some quinacridone gold (Winsor Newton) and painted some of the highlighted twigs and straw of the nest....while I know some of you are cringing (watercolor purists don't use any white, they use the white of the paper)....think of this as a “heavier” technique than reserved whites or golds....It gives some substance to the nest...(which is hard to see via the computer screen) Maybe just another technique to add to your arsenal.... |
